What Generative Engine Optimization Actually Is
You have probably seen the acronym GEO, usually described as "SEO for AI". That is close enough to be useful and vague enough to be misleading. This page explains what generative engine optimization actually refers to, what Google says about it, and which parts of it are genuinely new work.
What the term means
Generative engine optimization is the practice of making your pages likely to be used and cited when an AI system answers a question. A generative engine is any product that composes an answer in prose rather than returning a list of links: Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot.
The difference from ordinary search is worth being precise about. In a classic result, the reward is a click — your page appears, someone chooses it, they arrive. In a generated answer, the reward is often a citation — your page is one of the sources the answer was built from, named in a link beside it, and the reader may never visit you at all.
Picture a bakery that publishes a clear page on why sourdough needs a long cold rise. Someone asks an assistant that question. The old win was ranking third and getting the click. The new win is the assistant explaining the cold rise and citing the bakery as where it learned it. Those are different outcomes, and only one of them shows up in a visits chart.
What Google actually says
This is where most writing on the subject goes wrong, so it is worth stating plainly: Google has not published a separate ranking system for its AI features, and does not describe GEO as a distinct discipline. Its documentation on AI features in Search says the same thing its ordinary guidance says — create helpful, reliable, people-first content, make sure the page can be crawled, and there is no special markup that opts you into an AI Overview.
So the honest position is that the large majority of GEO is SEO you should already be doing. What is genuinely different is narrower than the acronym suggests, and it comes down to three things.
Access is now a separate decision. Google's crawler for Search is not the only one that matters. Other companies run their own, and each obeys robots.txt — the text file at the root of your site that tells automated visitors where they may go — independently. Blocking one does not block the others, and allowing Googlebot does not allow anyone else.
Passages get quoted, not pages. An answer is assembled from fragments. A page that buries its answer under four paragraphs of preamble is harder to quote than one that answers in its first two sentences.
Being named elsewhere counts. These systems are trained and grounded on a wide slice of the web, so what other sites say about you contributes to whether you are treated as a source on a subject at all.
What to do
- Check
robots.txtand decide, deliberately, which AI crawlers you allow. It is a real choice with a real trade-off, not an oversight to fix in one direction. - Answer the question the page is about in its opening two sentences, then expand. This helps a human skimmer and a machine extracting a passage for the same reason.
- Keep the existing fundamentals: a descriptive title, clear headings, content that genuinely answers the query. Read writing content that deserves to rank, because the requirement has not changed.
- Say who wrote it and on what basis. Attribution is one of the few signals a system has for whether an unfamiliar site is worth citing.
- Expect to measure differently. Referral traffic from an assistant is small and often invisible; citations are the outcome, and they are much harder to count.
Common mistakes
The first is treating GEO as a replacement for SEO. It is not a successor discipline. Ordinary search still sends far more traffic to almost every site, and the technical work underneath both is the same work.
The second is buying a "GEO package" built on claimed ranking factors. Nobody outside these companies knows how sources are selected, the selection is not stable between products or between months, and no vendor has privileged access to it.
The third is writing for machines. Text arranged to be quotable by a model, at the cost of being pleasant for a person, tends to fail at both.
Be careful with advice that assigns numbers to this — "cited 40% more often", "the top factor in AI Overviews". No published source supports figures like that, they are not reproducible, and they are the clearest signal that you are reading marketing rather than documentation.
